THE BRIEF

Vybfy is a Nigerian app for finding local places, like restaurants, hotels and boutiques, and rating them with honest, detailed reviews instead of empty five-star ratings.

The app was brand new, so the brief was a launch video for social media and the app store page. It had to explain the app in under 90 seconds to people who had never heard of it, show the real app (searching, nearby places, ratings), and end by telling people to download it on the App Store and Google Play.

THE APPROACH

The video starts with a problem everyone has had: people in cars, cafés and on busy Lagos streets scrolling their phones, not sure where to go, and a glowing five-star review ('AMAZING! highly recommended product. loved it!') that tells you nothing useful.

I cut between real-life footage and bold colour screens with short lines of text, like 'rate with Vybfy', to keep it moving. Then we see the app: a map filling up with places, a search for boutiques, hotel listings with opening hours and distance, and ratings that score things like service and room quality separately. The end shows real people who benefit (a boutique owner, a hotel receptionist, someone in a car) before the logo appears with 'Discover. Vyb. Rate.'

The colours follow the brand: purple and pink with a touch of orange. Every scene has one job, and every cut is timed to the voiceover.

THE RESULT

A launch video that makes the app clear the first time you watch it, and works on social media and the app store page. Mixing real people with app screens gives the brand a human face while still showing exactly how it works.

✦ Director's note

“Explainer videos fail when they try to say everything. We gave every scene one job, started with a problem everyone has felt (useless reviews), and let the visuals carry the rest.”
